For everyone else, I would recommend seeing Metropolis at least once just for the visual spectacle, preferably in a theater or the biggest screen you can find.Īt its release, Metropolis was hyped, hyped, and hyped some more, but if you want to read raves you can get plenty from the mainstream press. The combination of classic visual style and archetypal story should make Metropolis familiar enough for older viewers not accustomed to anime, and a must-see treat for fans of classic anime-everything Tezuka could have imagined.

Perhaps most interesting and simultaneously frustrating, it is a rare film designed to take full advantage of an expansive theater screen, but the effect is utterly lost on all but the largest home theater screens. It is also hampered by loose directing, a weak plot, and characters who aren't given enough time to develop. It is an undeniable visual tour de force-a technically masterful, captivating vision of a modern world that never was. But for all the visual spectacle and Cold-War flavor, I was never as engrossed by the story as I expected or wanted to be.

Luckily, it’s never been easier to experience this all-time classic. Metropolis is a testament to the enduring quality of well-made films. All combined, the film’s special effects and narrative combine to create a dreamlike vision of the future, one where the divisions that plagued society for years have grown even direr, but where hope is thankfully not lost. Lang capitalizes on that surreal, almost nightmarish quality by injecting the film with several instances of hallucinatory magic, like the moment when a machine transforms in front of our very eyes into a religious temple eating the city’s workers. The result is a gothic creation that feels strangely real and unreal at the same time. The director and his team employed revolutionary (at the time) uses of miniatures and mirrors to create not only the titular city but also the feeling that its actors were physically present in its various miniature sets.

Lang captures Metropolis’ many wonders with the grace and unerring vision of a true artist. The plot of Metropolis is as relevant today as it was in 1927. It’s in the film’s stark black and white photography, the smoke and steam shown billowing from the machines, the rigidity of its massive skyscrapers, and the way that the city’s buildings and machinery dwarf even the most powerful and privileged of its citizens. The weight of Metropolis comes through the bombast of its musical score, the emotive faces of its characters, and the visual ache that throbs through the bones of every city worker. In fact, to distill Metropolis down to a simple plot synopsis is to rob it of much of its power. The film doesn’t just communicate its themes through its narrative though. Throughout its runtime, Metropolis touches on themes of industrialization, poverty, economic inequality, and corporate apathy - subjects that were relevant in 1927 and remain so to this day. The film follows the son of the city’s powerful mastermind as he becomes invested in the plight of the workers and attempts to bridge the vast chasm separating the city’s classes. The workers are forced to live underground and work grueling hours operating machinery that powers the city.
